They were told they could only take what they could carry, given a family identification number, and shipped off to internment camps surrounded by barbed wire fencing and machine gun towers. Many lost their homes, farms, and other businesses. Even though they were American citizens, the American government locked up many Japanese Americans during World War II. They were told it was for their own protection. So, were their civil rights violated?
We have heard it many times before… “ I know my rights!”. But do you? Would you know how to defend your civil rights with facts?
Using an incident from our recent history, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, as a basis for this educational site, we have developed lesson plans, video excerpts, and research materials to be used for class projects, papers, and classroom discussions about our civil and constitutional rights as they apply to our everyday lives and current issues we face.
